Health Minister Enrique Paris thanked the healthcare sector for its efforts to fight the pandemic, saying "I want to thank the healthcare team, all of them, from the person who cleans to the person who works in intensive care."

SANTIAGO, June 29 (Xinhua) -- Chile on Monday reported a total of 275,999 people have tested positive for the novel coronavirus since the outbreak began.

The COVID-19 death toll climbed to 5,575 after 66 more patients died in the previous 24 hours, the Health Ministry said.

In the same period of time, tests detected 4,017 new cases of infection out of 16,799 tests carried out in the past 24 hours, which brought the total number of tests done since widespread testing began in March to 1,096,443.

Currently, 34,270 cases are considered to be active, meaning they are being treated in hospital or in isolation for a two-week period.

Health Minister Enrique Paris thanked the healthcare sector for its efforts to fight the pandemic, saying "I want to thank the healthcare team, all of them, from the person who cleans to the person who works in intensive care."

He also thanked "all Chileans" for complying with ongoing lockdown measures. ■
