PARIS, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- Two people went missing during heavy rains in the Gard department in the south of France, local authorities said on Tuesday.
Some 800 firefighters remain in the department undertaking cleanup operations, Gard's prefecture said in a statement.
Placed on red alert by Meteo-France in the morning, Gard suffered a huge storm with abundant precipitation. In the town of Saint-Dionizy, 183 mm of rain fell in two hours, the equivalent of two months of rain in normal weather.
Part of the A9 motorway between Nimes and Montpellier was closed to traffic, while rail traffic between the two cities was also interrupted.
Meteo-France said the situation is now developing favorably, with a gradual attenuation of thunderstorm activity.
